Do You Wait Until the Last Minute?
Some people feel motivated and more productive if they wait until the last moment to get things done. They ride the wave of adrenaline and feel like they’ve conquered the world when their tasks are complete.
Most do not. The Dragons of Stress typically get people in a strangle hold that has them crying “Uncle,” and vowing to do it differently and earlier, next year.
Well, next year is now. I’m here to remind you that at the start of this historically busy month, you can get yourself organized and do things in advance so you don’t meet the holidays exhausted, depleted, and depressed.
MEDITATE
In the next few days, devote 15 minutes to a meditation in which you think about all of the obligations you have this month, whether it involves just showing up to a party or hosting a dinner. Are there recitals, concerts, sporting events, or cookie baking challenges you’ve signed up for? No plans are too small to include.
JOURNAL
Then make a list of each of your obligations, events, etc. and what you need to do, buy in a store, order online, or wear in order to be prepared for it.
TAKE ACTION
If you need to schedule a hair appointment, do it right away, don’t procrastinate.
Even in “just showing up” you will likely have to do more than you think. Decide, well in advance, what you will wear. Try it on and check to see that it’s fresh and clean and in good condition. That will go a long way toward alleviating last minute frustration and stress. If you’re hosting a dinner party, set the table a day or two in advance. Lay out the serving pieces you’ll use for each dish, with a serving utensil. Have a menu to check off so you don’t leave a dish in the refrigerator you forgot was in there. Look for ways to bundle your errands and map out a route, leaving the last stop for groceries so they don’t spoil in the car.
A little pre-planning can not only keep the Dragons of Stress at bay, it can send them packing for more chaotic places to disrupt, far far away from you.
Plan ahead, be calm, and stay enchanted!
