Spring Ahead and Stay There?

Daylight Saving Time (DST) is set for 2 a.m. Sunday, on March 12, 2023. Spring ahead. But will your state allow you to fall back, in October?

The U.S. Senate passed the Sunshine Protection Act of 2021, which would abolish clock changes in favor of permanent DST all year long.

The Act still requires approval by the House and President Biden. It was supposed to happen in 2022 but didn’t and then Sen. Marco Rubio, from Florida, reintroduced it again. Currently, states may be allowed to opt out of DST and stay on permanent standard time. Only federal action can establish permanent daylight saving time in the United States.

According to Sleep Foundation, the following states have passed legislation calling for permanent daylight saving time, if federal law allows them to do so: Maine, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Minnesota, Oregon, Utah, Wyoming, Ohio, Colorado, Delaware, Kentucky, Tennessee, South Carolina, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia.

There is no law in Alaska, Vermont, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Michigan, New York Massachusetts, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, California, Nevada, Nebraska, Illinois, Indiana, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, New Mexico, Kansas, Missouri, North Carolina, District of Columbia, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Texas.

Arizona and Hawaii will remain on permanent standard time.

Everyone’s sleep is always affected when we change times back and forth. Some love the extended hours of daylight and other people, don’t. How about you? Are you a fan of permanent DST or not?

At least for now, spring ahead and stay enchanted.
