Can Meditation Reduce Alzheimer’s Risk?
I did some research last week when Dr. Laura Koniver, the Intuition Physician, wrote about this study on one of the Enchanted Keys, Meditation, and its ability to increase blood flow to the brain’s centers that control cognition and emotional regulation. She stated that, “This one technique (Kirtan Kriya Meditation) has been previously shown to decrease anxiety and depression while improving sleep. But now you can add to that impressive list: reduces dementia risk.”
"Kirtan Kriya was effective in reducing multiple risk factors for Alzheimers disease,” in this 12-minute meditative practice. I discovered that there are ways to also do this as a 30-minute or 6-minute practice as well.
Dr. Koniver linked to the results that were published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease this past May, 2021, demonstrating that after just 12 minutes, they observed “enhanced blood flow to crucial areas of the brain — areas that experience decreased blood flow and the build up of tau proteins in Alzheimers disease.”
It’s a simple seated meditation with mudras (hand gestures) of touching thumb to the fingers on each hand as you chant 4 sounds, on specific notes, that translate to “my true essence” or “my true identity” reaffirming that you are truly you at your core. Apparently, when light pressure is put on these certain points of the fingers, along with the chanting, the mouth is stimulated by the vibration and the pituitary gland and the pineal glands are activated to bring about clearing and clarity.
I’ve been practicing it all week and have experienced the calming and clarity of thought. It offers me the same feeling I have when the house is all vacuumed, the countertops cleaned and disinfected, and everything is in its place. Ahh.
If you wish to check out more information about it, here is a follow-along, YouTube version of this meditation to learn how to do it.
